Ode to a Dog - Maddie Bell

"She is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are her life, her love, and her leader. she will be yours,
faithful and true, to the last beat of her heart.
You owe it to her to be worthy of such devotion."
-- Unknown

I'm not sure I was worthy of Maddie's devotion but I am certainly thankful for every aspect of her life that she gave to us. Maddie helped us to form a family, to form a unit that would take care of her needs. She was the patriarch that set my sights towards the meaning of loyalty, devotion, friendship and the true "hood", brotherhood and sisterhood, that brings us together. Maddie could have possibly been the perfect dog, because she was with us, and because she let us be with her.

Maddie's life was a teaching life, she taught us to:

Like the garage
There might be good things in the trashcan
Never run into a glass door
Don't eat too much chocolate
Always eat the best parts of the ham, chicken and steak
One should always take care of their feet
Always find the best place to lay down
Don't run if you can bark and still get the same reaction
Smell everything
Make enough noise so people know where you are
Don't be afraid to mark your own territory
Fight for your partner
Don't let the cat see you sweat
Always enjoy a bath
Be thin enough to fit through a dog door but big enough so you are not easily picked up
Always know where your guardians are
Eat peanut butter when you can
Always clean your plate
Drink responsibly and delicately
Be responsive when wearing a hat or costume
Give out just enough kisses
If someone has the same color hair, stick with them
Make sounds when you enjoy yawning or a good ear rub
Take treats delicately
Always greet a stranger
No need to chase cats
Smile and breathe properly
Run through snow when you feel like it
Burst open a door once in a while
Be good
Love everyday and spend it like its your last, with a lot of gusto and pride
Love all, even the mailman

Gently floating on it's charming risings
On the river's current
On the shining waves
One hand reaches
Reaches for the bank
Where the spring sleeps and
The birds, the birds sing.

Under a dome of white jasmine

Can I Stay Here With You Til the Morning?

So can I stay here with you, till the day breaks?
There's something you should know
I ain't got no place to go
So can I stay here with you, till the day breaks
How happy it would make me to see your face when I wake.

Commonalities

I've mentioned before my brother Robbie, who is an incredible artist. Some of his work is here. He's also an incredible guy.

Dreams of Honesty

No amount of coffee, no amount of crying
No amount of whiskey, no amount of wine
No, nothing else will do
I've gotta have you, I've gotta have you.

Quest for a Shoulder

I gotta get home there's a garden to tend.
There's fruit on the ground and the birds have all moved back into my attic, whistling static,
When the young learn to fly I will patch all the holes up again.

Well i can't believe that my lime tree is dead
I thought it was sleeping
I guess it got fed up with not being fed
And I would be too I need food in my belly and hope that my time isn't soon

So I, try, to understand, what I can't hold in my hand, and where ever we are, home is there too
And if you, could try to find it too, cause this place is overgrown into waxing mood,
Home is wherever we are, if there's love there too.

In the back of our house there's a trail that wont end
We were walking so far that it grew back in,
There's no trail at all, only grass growing tall,
Get out my machette and battle with time once again,
But i'm bout to loose because i'll be damned if time don't win.

Discourse

"There could have been no two hearts so open, no tastes so similar, no feelings so in unison, no countenances so beloved. Now they were as strangers; nay, worse than strangers, for they could never become acquainted. It was a perpetual estrangement"
